A dental crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth’s surface, which restores it to its original shape and size. A dental crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with dental fillings or other types of dental restorations. A dental crown may become necessary or desired for one or more of the following reasons:

  • Fractured/Broken Teeth
  • Cosmetic Enhancement
  • Decaying Teeth
  • Fractured or Large Fillings
  • Root Canal Treatment/Preparation

Dental crowns are customized in shape, size, and color to accurately match your natural teeth. This is done to restore full functionality and optimal cosmetic results for your smile. Please contact Dr. Richard Barton’s practice to learn about our treatment options for enhancing both the beauty and functionality of your smile.

The dental procedure usually takes place over two dental appointments. The first appointment consists of taking several highly accurate molds or impressions. These will be used to help create both your finalized porcelain crown and a temporary crown. Once the molds have been taken, your porcelain crown will be custom created in a dental laboratory over approximately two weeks. During this two-week period, you will wear a temporary crown. When preparing you for the temporary dental crown, Dr. Richard Barton will numb your tooth and clean away any decay. Your tooth will be shaped to properly fit the crown. At the second dental appointment, the temporary crown will be removed to make way for your porcelain crown. Dr. Richard Barton will prepare your tooth for the final crown by carefully cleaning your tooth again. The new crown will be precisely placed to ensure that your mouth will again have full functionality. Instructions will be given from Dr. Richard Barton regarding your new dental crown. You will be encouraged to make and keep regular dental visits to ensure your new crown remains in good shape.
